At the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, our department is dedicated to advancing eye care through clinical excellence, innovative research, and exceptional education. We provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art services for both adult and pediatric patients, ensuring that each individual receives personalized and compassionate care.
Established as a formal division within the UNM Department of Surgery in the 1990s and elevated to a full department in 2020, our team has grown to include 11 full-time faculty members. Our rapid evolution reflects our commitment to meeting the expanding needs of New Mexico and beyond, and to staying at the forefront of ophthalmic innovation.
Our mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in those with eye disorders and blindness in all of our communities and beyond, by cultivating a broadly based learning community of physicians, trainees, staff, and patients to deliver high quality and up to date care for all stages and complexities of eye disease.
Our vision is to be a beacon of light and hope for New Mexicans with vision loss, through the delivery of outstanding, compassionate eye care, the training of young ophthalmologists, educators, and vision scientists, and development of innovative research in eye disorders.
Our values are devotion to and respect for the needs of every member of our shared communities, and honesty and transparency in our words and deeds.
