Welcome to the land of enchantment! The UNM Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is a dynamic group of eye-care providers, educators, scientists, and staff, all dedicated to serving others. We began as a formal division within the UNM Department of Surgery in the 1990’s, and became a full Department in 2020. We now have 15 full-time faculty members, and are continuing to grow.
Our mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in those with eye disorders and blindness in all of our communities and beyond, by cultivating a broadly-based learning community of physicians, trainees, staff, and patients to deliver high quality and up to date care for all stages and complexities of eye disease. Our vision is to be a beacon of light and hope for New Mexicans with vision loss, through the delivery of outstanding, compassionate eye care, the training of young ophthalmologists, educators, and vision scientists, and development of innovative research in eye disorders. Our values are devotion to and respect for the needs of every member of our shared communities, and honesty and transparency in our words and deeds in everything we do.
This is an exciting time in our department, at UNM, and for all of New Mexico. Our hospital, faculty, facilities, and clinical services are all expanding. Our department is relatively young, but already offers a full range of clinical eye care. As you read through our website, please feel free to reach out for more information.
All best,
Jim
