The purpose of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is to improve the eye health of all New Mexicans. We work to accomplish that purpose through the four fundamental missions of the UNM School of Medicine: Clinical Service, Education, Research, and Community Outreach.

Cornea and external disease, comprehensive ophthalmology, ocular trauma with anterior segment reconstruction, secondary lens placement and complex cataract surgery.

Glaucoma, cataract surgery, comprehensive ophthalmology, eye trauma and complex cataract surgery.

Clinical Interests:
Diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous, including diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases and age-related macular degeneration.

Clinical Interests:
Comprehensive evaluation and management of diseases of the eyelids and ocular adnexa, orbit and lacrimal system. Functional, reconstructive and cosmetic eyelid surgery including dermatochalasis and ptosis repair, ectropion/entropion repair and excision/reconstruction of skin cancers around the eye. Diseases of the orbit including orbital fracture repair, orbital tumor management and medical and surgical treatment of thyroid-associated orbitopathy. Repair of tear-drainage problems including nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
Roy-Daniel Sanchez, O.D.
Clinical Interests:
Primary eye care, ocular disease, specialty contact lenses and tele-retinal imaging.
Kevin Sitko, M.D.
Clinical Interests:
Diseases affecting the neurologic pathways of vision and control of eye movements, including ischemic optic neuropathy, papilledema, optic neuritis, stroke, hereditary optic neuropathy, double vision, cranial neuropathies affecting eye movements, myasthenia gravis, neurodegenerative conditions with effects on vision and pupillary abnormalities. Other clinical interests are: the electrophysiologic testing of the eye in the diagnosis of ocular pathology, including full-field electroretinogram (ERG), multifocal ERG, electro-oculogram (EOG), pattern ERG and visual evoked potentials (VEP). Also, inflammatory conditions of the eye, called uveitis and cataract surgeries.

Primary and acute eye care, ocular disease and specialty contact lenses for eyes with damaged or irregular corneas and ocular surface issues of all kinds.

Research Interests:
Dr. A. Davis is primarily interested in research about improving surgical outcomes and education in all learners, from medical students
to clinical fellows and even faculty. Improving surgical training utilizing on-site training, video-based teaching, and developing a
curriculum to keep Ophthalmology in the medical school curriculum are active research projects. Additional research interests include:
developing a self-sustaining community-based clinic to provide free eyecare for indigent populations and working on understanding
perspectives and issues related to providers self-understanding and systems-based issues are also of particular interest for Dr. Davis.
