Apply online now to the University of New Mexico’s Academic Science Education and Research Training (ASERT) Institutional Research and Career Development Award (IRACDA) program, one of 21 programs supported by a NIGMS K12 grant nationally.
We are seeking competitive applicants who have received their PhD within the last year who are looking for a postdoctoral experience that embraces diversity and supports individualized career development. The program uses a cohort model of training that offers outstanding dual training in teaching and research to support a trajectory to an academic career. Successful applicants are eligible for up to 3 years of funding to conduct biomedically relevant research (75% time) and teach at affiliated minority serving institutions (25% time). The ASERT Program provides opportunities to train with over 50 research and education mentors that represent a diverse range of interests and expertise.
The ASERT-IRACDA Program at the University of New Mexico was first funded by NIH-NIGMS in 2009 and capitalizes on UNM’s outstanding interdisciplinary research opportunities and internationally recognized educational resources. As with all IRACDA programs, ASERT provides 3 years of support for postdoctoral scholars, with 75% effort on research and 25% on education partnerships with our Minority Serving Institution partners. Approximately 12 scholars participate in the program at any given time, with research interests that have ranged from biology to bioengineering, from basic biomedical sciences to population health disparities and solutions. ASERT alumni have been highly successful at obtaining positions that support their individual career goals, in research-intensive and undergraduate academic institutions, biotechnology, science communication / journalism, biology education research and administration, among others.
The ASERT-IRACDA program also provides highly individualized education partnerships with our three MSI partners, each of which has unique and strong connections to the many diverse communities across New Mexico. Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) prepares culturally diverse Native American students from across the U.S. for a wide variety of career paths; Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) offers a wide variety of associate degrees and certificates to a highly diverse student population; New Mexico State University (NMSU) is a research-intensive institution in southern NM with a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs and courses. Education mentors and ASERT scholars at all three partner schools have opportunities to share their unique teaching and learning experiences at a yearly Education Retreat.
The Academic Science Education and Research Training (ASERT) program is funded by an NIGMS Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Awards (IRACDA) grant to the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. The purpose of the IRACDA program is to develop a diverse group of highly trained biomedical and behavioral scientists to address the nation’s biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs. ASERT accomplishes these goals by providing:
