Applying to the Program

Applicants are reviewed on a rolling basis from December to March each academic year. Four fellows will be selected annually to start as a cohort on September 1st. The 2024 cohort has been filled. Applications for the 2025 cohort will open in December 2024.

We especially encourage qualified applicants from underrepresented minority groups to apply.

Before you Apply

Required Qualifications

Must have received a Ph.D. or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university in the United States, or its equivalent in another country, within one year of application to ASERT.
Be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or permanent U.S. resident.
Have a strong interest in developing outstanding teaching as well as research skills.

Desired Qualifications

Interest in teaching at institutions that serve underrepresented minorities.
Demonstrated or expressed interest in team-based approaches to teaching.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Prior teaching experience (such as teaching assistantships or other forms of apprenticeship).

Health Science Center postdoctoral fellows not in the ASERT-IRACDA program may participate in ASERT with agreement of their research mentors. In such cases, fellows may gain teaching experience through numerous opportunities at UNM.

Pre-Application Recommendations

Before you begin the application, it will be helpful to gather the following documents and information:

Contact information for at least 2 references.
- You will be asked to provide name and email address for at least 2 references (one of which must be your doctoral research mentor).
- Reference letter writers will receive a request to submit their letters directly via the application site.
Documentation of degree credentials, if Ph.D. has been conferred
Graduate transcript (may be unofficial)
Specifics of your graduate degree
Dissertation title
Descriptions of:
- Any prior or current post-doctoral positions
