The Academic Science Education and Research Training (ASERT) program was inaugurated in 2009 and has been continuously funded for 15 years running. The integrated program is offers postdoctoral fellows professional development and practical skill building in research and teaching through partnerships between the University of New Mexico Main and Health Sciences Center Campuses, Central New Mexico Community College, New Mexico State University, and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute. There are 63 alumni and current fellows, 99% of whom are committed to careers in science and paying it forward by motivating the next generation of scientific scholars. Seventy percent of ASERT fellows are women, 46% are underrepresented minority (Hispanic, American Indian, Asian, Black), individuals with disabilities, and >95% are underrepresented in STEM. Fellows select an interdisciplinary research and education mentoring team from over 75 participating research and teaching mentors.
