Our special delivery Service offers comprehensive prenatal consultation and support, partnered with Maternal-Fetal-Medicine, genetic counselors, and Pediatric sub-specialists. We understand that having a baby who will require special medical attention can be a stressful time for families. We offer fetal diagnosis of birth defects, counseling for and information about the diagnosis, expected medical care of the infant, information on various support groups and palliative care plans when appropriate.

The department of maternal fetal medicine and the UNM Children's Hospital have some of the most advanced diagnostic capabilities available to help make the diagnosis, including fetal MRI. The members of the special delivery service embrace a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and support of families requiring special care prenatally and after delivery.
The University of New Mexico NICU encompasses 52 beds, with an additional 12 intermediate care nursery beds. Our NICU focuses on family centered care, giving your baby the support they need.
There are times when families must make difficult decisions about the care of their infant. Prenatally, the staff involved in the Special Delivery Service will help families navigate this process. As the infant is supported in the NICU, the staff there will offer expert, compassionate counseling to help with these difficult decisions.
Sometimes it is necessary to develop a palliative care plan. It is important to realize that palliation does not mean end-of-life, but rather supporting the infant and family through complex or life-threatening disease processes. The palliative care service focuses on developing a care plan with the family so that their infant may receive the care they deserve.
