The UNM PRC recently completed a needs assessment of the system for addressing the needs of survivors of sexual assault in New Mexico. The assessment was done in collaboration with the New Mexico Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs, and provides recommendations for strenghthening the system. To read the report, click here.

CONSIDER NM Training Increases Naloxone Dispensing in New Mexico
On Nov. 18th, UNM PRC joined UNM Health Sciences partners to observe National Injury Prevention Day to raise awareness about the toll injury takes on our communities, and strategies for preventing injuries. Infant sleep sacks, bike helments, gun locks and retroreflective devices for pedestrians and cyclists were distributed. In partnership with the NM Department of Health and the NM Home Visiting Collaborative, UNM PRC also provided 200 infant sleep sacks to families in rural New Mexico.
On November 18th - National Injury Prevention Day - the Statewide Strategic Plan for Preventing Firearm Injuries and Deaths in New Mexico, 2021-2026 was released. The plan highlights feasible, evidence-based strategies that can help reduce suicides, homicides and unitentional firearm injuries and can be used as a roadmap for individuals, communities and organizations.
In September 2020, approximately 570 students who attend Shiwi Ts'ana Elementary School participated in the 4-week Eat Smart to Play Hard (ESPH) program.

VIVA Connects, the National Park Service and NM Department of Health teamed up with the City of Española to complete a walkability audit of the historic, westside of town.
The Boston Hill Trail Signage and Trail Expansion project is facilitated by multiple members of the Gila Trails and Open Space Coalition (GTOSC) and the Town of Silver City Trails and Open Space Committee (TOSC). Trails are color-coded on the maps, correlating to colored trail markers with directional stickers and the new Boston Hill logo, on each trail marker. The newly created Blue Loop provides an internal loop of the Boston Hill Open Space – there is user access to the Blue Loop from each trailhead.
Dr. Nan Zeng was awarded the 2021 International Chinese Society for Physical Activities and Health (ICSPAH) Outstanding Early Career Research Award. Each year, the award is given to a faculty member who earned their ternimal degree within five years, has shown evidence of first-authored publications in physical activity and health in peer-reviewed journals, and demonstrates impact to the field.
Sheldon Benally was awarded an America Walks, Walking College Program Fellowship, which is designed to build the capacity of local advocates to increase walking and expand walkability in their communities.
Congratulations to Darlene Lucero, Accountant 3, for winning one of the 2020 Department of Pediatrics Staff Awards. Darlene was nominated for her dedication and commitment to the Center demonstrated by her willingness to work early mornings, evenings and weekends to ensure that the accounting for all of the Center's projects is accurate and timely. She has also implemented new strategies for tracking Center projects and action items. We are happy to have her on our team. The award comes with a certificate and $1,000.
The UNM PRC congratulates Dr. Theresa Cruz, Deputy Director, on her recent Faculty Service Award from the UNM Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Cruz was recognized for her Outstanding Work in Advocacy which includes her efforts to improve policies and systems that support early childhood home visiting programs and her research to study school policies and programs that can protect against multiple forms of violence.
