Residency Benefits
All UNM residents receive benefits, pay and leave in accordance with an annual contract negotiated by the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR), an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union.
All residents are provided with the following:
- 21 days of annual leave per contract year (15 weekdays, 6 weekend days)
- 21 days of sick leave per contract year (15 weekdays, 6 weekend days)
- 14 days of parental leave per contract year (10 weekdays, 4 weekend days)
- 7 holidays
- 5 days of professional leave per duration of residency for interviewing for post-residency positions
- 5 days of educational leave per contract year to attend conferences or take exams
- ½ day of wellness leave per quarter
Family leave is offered for a maximum of four months, pending approval. It will use available annual and sick leave first with further leave of absence without pay (under FMLA). UNM will pay health insurance premiums during approved family leave.
As of August 2020, current salaries are:
- Post-Graduate Year (PGY) I: $55,515
- PGY II: $57,315
- PGY III: $59,401
- PGY IV: $61,559
- PGY V: $64,268
All residents are provided with the following:
- Health care coverage for residents and their dependents is available through Blue Cross Blue Shield. Care or referrals obtained from a UNM provider at the UNM Health Sciences Center require no deductible or co-payment for most services, including hospitalizations.
- Dental insurance is available to residents and their dependents.
- Vision insurance is available to residents and their dependents.
- Disability insurance is available to residents and their dependents.
- Life insurance is provided to residents at no cost.
- Malpractice and tail insurance are provided to residents at no cost.

Tuition Reimbursement
Reimbursement is available upon successful completion for up to 8 hours per semester (4 in summer) of academic credit toward a degree (e.g., masters) in a health-related field for professional development.
