Why UNM is My Choice for Residency: During my interview, UNM immediately stood out to me from other programs based on my interaction with the residents. Everyone was so outgoing, friendly, genuine, and easy to talk to. I got the impression from this group that they were very close, did fun things together outside of work, and overall had a positive work environment. And I was right! Since starting my residency, I have had so much fun getting to know the other residents, and becoming close friends. We go hiking, try new restaurants, visit wineries, go rafting, go to soccer games, and generally have a lot of fun exploring Albuquerque. More importantly, the work environment is exactly what I needed to have a positive residency experience. My seniors were beyond impressive as far as teaching me, having patience, and being encouraging during this new learning process. There really is an emphasis on taking on a leadership role your second and third year, appearing much like an attending early on in training. Also, I have loved living in Albuquerque since moving here from the Midwest! It is absolutely beautiful, has great weather, and offers so many interesting and exciting things to do.
Favorite Things About UNM: I take a lot of pride in our program. I never thought I would feel most at home in ABQ after moving from the midwest, but the staff and residents here have really made me feel like this is home. Our program is structured in a way that teaches you to handle a large and medically diverse patient load. There is a lot of teaching that goes on, and I felt like a completely different person by the end of my intern year - I felt so confident and that I could take on any challenge!
Favorite Things About NM: I love having the mountains in the background of every jog I go on! It's just such a beautiful place to live. I love driving up to Taos for water rafting and visiting the hot water springs. There are about a dozen different unique places in New Mexico you can take a day trip to. Living here has been such an exciting adventure for me and my boyfriend!
