These behavioral health snapshots were prepared by the UNM Center for Health Policy (CHP). They are designed to capture an array of measures across behavioral healthcare delivery and use within New Mexico’s newly formed Behavioral Health Regions.
Demographic data, including race/ethnicity and age, is from Census.gov. Crisis call data is from the New Mexico Crisis and Access Line (988) for calendar years 2023 and 2024. Information regarding Certified Community Behavioral Health Centers (CCBHCs), Crisis Triage Centers (CTCs), and Mobile Crisis information came from the New Mexico Health Care Authority and the CHP through individual meetings with mobile crisis response teams across New Mexico.
Behavioral healthcare utilization data were obtained from New Mexico Medicaid claims. Using New Mexico Medicaid behavioral health data for calendar year 2023, the denominator includes beneficiaries with at least one behavioral health (BH) diagnosis. Behavioral health diagnoses include mental health conditions, substance use disorders (SUD), and intentional self-harm.
Among beneficiaries with a BH diagnosis, we examined utilization of the following services:
