Caps and tassels must be worn. Shawls, cords, stoles, etc., should be academic or from a University-recognized student organization.
Tassels should be worn on the right side of your cap.
Masters graduates wear their hoods to the ceremony.
Doctoral and terminal degree graduates should arrive carrying, but not wearing, their hoods. Their hoods will be placed on them by faculty during the hooding ceremony portion of the event.
Honor cords for University Honors are available from the bookstore. Other honor cords (such as for SNA) are available through their respective honor societies.
Do not bring personal items that cannot be carried across the stage. Students will not have access to anywhere safe to store items and they may not return to the same seat after they walk.
The venue will be enforcing a Clear Bag Policy. Please read the linked policy carefully, as you will not be allowed in the building with any bags that are not compliant.
Comfortable shoes are encouraged. Students will be walking up and down several flights of hard concrete stairs.
Helium balloons and confetti are not allowed in the building.
Representing yourself or your heritage
Commencement academic regalia must be worn, but it can be left unzipped and open to display personal heritage or cultural regalia underneath it.
Decorating your cap
Tasteful decoration of caps is permitted. However, if it is determined to be offensive by a Marshal, students will have to remove it to participate.
Lost regalia
There are no backup regalia available at the event. It is encouraged to double-check all pieces of regalia before coming to the ceremony.
It is recommended that students hang up their regalia a few days before convocation to make sure they have all the necessary pieces. If you are missing an item, students should pick it up at the UNM Bookstore with enough time to ensure they can arrive at the Pit at the appropriate time.
Accessibility and safety
Requests for accessibility accommodations for students can be made when registering or by contacting the UNM College of Nursing Office of Advancement.
