Lean is based on the Toyota Production System and was originally intended for the manufacturing industry, but it has proven successful in the healthcare industry. Lean focuses on the voice of the customer and learning what the customer values. It improves processes by eliminating waste and adding value. For example, waste could be the extra time it takes a provider to leave an exam room and get a consent form for a procedure. Using the Lean approach, you would place consent forms in all exam rooms so the provider doesn’t have to leave the room. Therefore, you add value (saving time) and you eliminate waste (the extra time spent retrieving the form).
