Financial Conflict of Interest: A situation associated with an investigator's participation in UNMHSC institutional activities (e.g. research, teaching, professional practice) where it reasonably appears, on an actual or potential basis, that the individual’s significant financial interest could directly and significantly affect the design, conduct, or reporting of UNMHSC research or affect the conduct of other institutional activities (e.g. teaching, professional practice, and other job duties).
Financial Interest: Anything of monetary value, whether or not the value is readily ascertainable.
Institutional Responsibilities: An individual’s professional responsibilities on behalf of the employing institution (e.g., research, research consultation, teaching, professional practice, institutional committee memberships, and service on panels such as Institutional Review Boards or Data and Safety Monitoring Boards).
Significant Financial Interest (SFI): Anything of monetary value belonging to an individual’s spouse, domestic partner, or dependent children that reasonably appears to be related to an individual’s institutional responsibilities.It includes, but is not limited to:
For any publicly traded entity, a significant financial interest exists if the aggregated value of any remuneration (e.g., consulting fees, honoraria, paid authorship) in the 12 months preceding the disclosure and the value of any equity(e.g., stock, options, or other ownership interest) as of the date of the disclosure exceeds $5,000.
For any non-publicly traded entity a significant financial interest exists if:
There is any equity interest (e.g., stock, options, or other ownership interest) as of the date of the disclosure, regardless of value, or
The aggregated value of any remuneration (e.g., consulting fees, honoraria, paid authorship) in the 12 months preceding the disclosure in the 12 months exceeds $5,000.
Intellectual property rights (e.g. patents, copyrights) or royalties from these rights other than through UNMHSC or the Science and Technology Corporation (STC)
Reimbursed or sponsored travel related to an investigators institutional responsibilities unless from a government agency (local, state, or federal) or institution of higher education.
Income from seminars, lectures, teaching engagements unless from a governmental agency or institution of higher education.
Definitions for Conflicts of Interest pertaining to Research:
Investigator: Principal investigator, the co-principal investigator and any person (faculty, staff, students) who is responsible for the design, conduct, or reporting of UNMHSC research.
Non-UNM Investigator: Any person responsible for the design, conduct, or reporting of UNMHSC research employed by an entity other than UNMHSC. This includes a sub-award recipient, independent contractor or collaborator not employed by UNMHSC.
UNM Research: Systematic investigation designed to develop or contribute to generalized knowledge. Includes basic and applied investigations and product development that is:
Funded by or through UNMHSC (includes outside sponsored funding)
Conducted at UNM HSC, regardless of funding
Non-sponsored and conducted off campus by UNMHSC employees
