Faster research, more cures, healthier communities
The fields of healthcare and life sciences are experiencing a fundamental shift toward transdisciplinary, integrative, and data-intensive approaches to research. These developments, coupled with the use of information technology platforms, are helping transform healthcare, achieving greater value alongside improved outcomes and safety.
The complex data, information and knowledge needs associated with these changes require a comprehensive approach to necessary data sharing, data management and storage, data quality assurance and transparency of research findings.
The Office of Research has designed this website to provide faculty and staff guidance on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) data management and sharing policy, data quality assurance/improvement, and ClinicalTrials.gov requirements.
The NIH has a longstanding commitment to making the results of NIH-funded funded research available. Responsible data management and sharing has many benefits, including accelerating the pace of biomedical research, enabling validation of research results, and providing accessibility to high-value datasets.
Proper data management and storage is crucial for maintaining scientific rigor and research integrity. The University's researchers and administrators are responsible for properly managing and securing research data. This includes protection of a research participant’s data, continued access to data for research purposes, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations and University policies. The resources provided support the researchers' use and management of data, especially sensitive and confidential or restricted data.
To ensure the secure and compliant storage of records, all electronic research data and electronic research records at UNM Health Sciences MUST be stored on the N:\Research-Studies network drive. The N:\Research-Studies network drive is established by the Information Security Office (ISO). For human subjects research and animal research, the N:\Research-Studies network drive must be established after the protocol is IRB-approved or IACUC-approved, respectively. If you do not have this network drive setup, contact the ISO at HSC-ISO@salud.unm.edu and they will provide you with their request form. Please note that if you expect to store 1TB or more, a $24/TB monthly fee will be required. Central IT reviews their storage fees annually and updates them as appropriate.
ClinicalTrials.gov is a website and online database of clinical research studies and information about their results. The purpose of ClinicalTrials.gov is to provide information about clinical research studies to the public, researchers, and health care professionals. The U.S. government does not review or approve the safety and science of all studies listed on this website.
