Welcome to the Urology Residency Program at The University of New Mexico. Our goal is to train all of our residents to be excellent surgeons and physicians. We seek residency applicants who are well rounded, of the highest integrity and dedication, who have excelled in medical school, and who have demonstrated the capability to master the intricacies of the complex and constantly evolving field of urology.

The urology teaching service at UNM is under the supervision of four board-certified urologists. The subspecialty areas represented include pediatric urology, urologic oncology, renal transplant, stone disease, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, reconstruction, as well as general urology. The resident team, under the direction of the chief resident and attending staff, rounds on and cares for all inpatients and consults on the urology service.

The program is five years in length and accepts two residents per year. Residents spend six months in General Surgery followed by 4.5 years in Urology.

Resident rotations take place at UNM Hospital and Childrens Hospital, VA Medical Center and Presbyterian Hospital. This provides a diverse clinical experience and ample opportunities for the residents to be involved in all aspects of patient care and decision making.

Our residents complete this program with the background and skills that enable them be competitive and to succeed in whichever endeavor they choose, academic or private practice.

The UNM Urology Residency Program is fully accredited by the residency review committee for urology of the ACGME. In order to maintain such approval, we must meet certain standards spelled out by these governing bodies. These standards include providing an equitable wage and benefits package. We also provide a scholarly environment for our residents with readily accessible library and online facilities. We have a didactic curriculum, consisting of basic science and clinical topics. We provide residents with sufficient breadth and depth of pre-operative, operative, and post-operative experience in order to prepare them for certification as diplomats of the American Board of Urology.
