Environments & Equipment

The IHSC has a variety of environments and equipment for the delivery of simulation activities.

Environments

• (24) Clinic Rooms (for Outpatient Simulation)
  • The clinics are divided into north and south areas, each having a dozen (12) clinic rooms.
  • Designed for clinical encounters with standardized patients (actors trained for a specific role/case) to practice clinical and communication skills.
  • Equipped with otoscope and ophthalmoscope (and two sizes of specula). Stocked with gloves, exam paper, paper towels, and hand sanitizer.
  • Eight out of the 24 clinic rooms are slightly larger and can be reconfigured to fit various equipment (such as exam tables, hospital beds, or PT treatment beds) and adapt to different settings, like converting a clinic room into a hospital room.
  • Each side has an inner area where students can review case notes.
    
    
    
• (5) Inpatient Skills Labs (32 beds)
  
  • Designed to simulate a hospital ward for repetitive practice.
  • The rooms are equipped with all the supplies you would use in a clinical setting (gloves, simulated medical-grade gases, and more).
  • Each room contains either 6 or 8 beds with low to mid-level fidelity manikins. These manikins are part of the College of Nursing’s inventory.
    • Note: Other programs may request these manikins for their own use (pending approval), or can request these manikins be removed from the beds prior to their event. Please include this information in your reservation request, or reach out to the IHSC Manager (HSC-IHSC@salud.unm.edu) for more information.

  Powered by Education Management Solutions (EMS) SIMULATIONiQ (SIMiQ), we offer telemedicine, telehealth encounters, and standardized patient visits via Zoom, which can also be recorded for debriefing and assessment.
  
  
• SP Staging Area
  This space is utilized by the School of Medicine's Standardized Patient Program both for training and to hold SPs between student/patient encounters.
  
  
  
• Student Waiting/Locker Area
  This space and the lockers are designated for day use by students participating in simulation activities within the IHSC.
  

Equipment

Typically, programs provide any unique supplies or equipment for their simulations, but the IHSC does maintain some equipment for checkout for programs, as available. This equipment includes:

• A/V Recording*. Powered by Education Management Solutions (EMS) SIMULATIONiQ (SIMiQ), all rooms in the IHSC are equipped with cameras and microphones for ad-hoc or scheduled recording. Paging speakers throughout the facility broadcast live and pre-recorded messages that cue students during simulated activities.
• Basic Supplies. Each simulation environment will include basic supplies like gloves, paper towels and sinks.
• Hospital Linens. We maintain an on-site inventory of hospital linens and are able to source additional items from University Hospital for your simulation (with enough notice and availability).

  • Note: The College of Nursing also maintains a robust inventory of low-to-high fidelity manikins that may be available for usage by other programs provided the inventory is available and its usage is outlined and approved by their simulation staff. • 3D Printing. The IHSC maintains several 3D printers and is willing to collaborate with users to develop props, simulators, or any other materials that would benefit and add realism to your simulation. Contact HSC-IHSC@salud.unm.edu to inquire about this service.
