The Student Well-being Advisory Council, or SWAC, was founded by Dr. Joyce Phillips, the previous Office of Professional Well-being (OPW) Director for Undergraduate Medical Education Wellness Initiatives, in January 2022. OPW leadership, including Dr. Cori Poffenberger, Interim Co-Director of OPW, and Dr. Caitlin Armijo, OPW Director for UME Wellness Initiatives, currently run SWAC. Each UNM School of Medicine class has two to four student representatives. Each student representative remains on council for the entirety of their undergraduate medical education.
OPW leadership and the student representatives meet monthly and discuss general student wellbeing, review the wellbeing curriculum, and identify new wellbeing initiatives that reflect the student sentiment.SWAC also helps organize various events for students. Recent events including sessions focused on yoga and mindfulness.
SWAC will send out email communications in the early fall of each academic year requesting applicants for the council. If you are interested in SWAC and student wellness, please consider applying. Also, please consider reaching out to one of our student representatives below.
