I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. I attended Bel Air High School where I met and married my high-school sweetheart, Yolie. I attended Baylor University, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1991. I earned my MD from Albany Medical College in 1995. I completed my Residency in Family Medicine at UNM in 1998. Then we moved to Roswell, New Mexico, where I have been practicing ever since. My wife and I have 4 boys. The two oldest are twins and were born at the UNM Hospital.
I have had the honor of practicing the full scope of family medicine. First, I practiced obstetrics for 6 years. For approximately 15 years, I practiced adult hospital medicine including ICU, inpatient pediatrics, Level 2 nursery, and newborn nursery. I am currently practicing outpatient Family Medicine and inpatient Pediatrics.
Like many of my medical colleagues throughout the state, I have had to wear many administrative hats throughout my career. I have been Department Chairman for nearly all departments at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. These include the Department of Medicine, Pediatric/Obstetrics Committee, Credentials Committee, Vice Chief of Staff, and Chief of Staff. I have been Treasurer for the Chaves County Medical Society and served as Doctor for the Day at the Round House in Santa Fe. I cover Friday night football games for both Roswell and Goddard High Schools. I occasionally cover the New Mexico Military Institute High School and Junior College football games as well. Finally, I was fortunate to be medical director for the U.S. Junior Pentathlon regional qualifying tournament at the height of COVID in Roswell, NM.
My community activities include coaching all of my sons in youth sports: baseball, soccer, and football. I have been an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 149, where I was able to participate in all four of my boys earning their Eagle Scout Merit Badges. I have also sat on the Roswell Symphony Orchestra Board. Currently, I sit on the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Board at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell and Eastern New Mexico Medical Center Hospital Board. I have been on the UNM BA/MD admissions committee and UNM community faculty advisory board for several years. I have and continue to supervise medical students from UNM and Burrell College of Medicine. I have Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, and nursing students rotate with me in my clinic.
I have enjoyed practicing Family Medicine in Roswell for the last 27 years. My practice ranges in age from newborn to my oldest patient, who turns 100 this year. The best part of Family Medicine is treating entire families and being allowed to be part of their lives.
