Nathaniel Roybal is a Native New Mexican; he grew up in Mora and graduated from Mosquero High School. He graduated from New Mexico State University, where he studied Animal and Range Sciences, was an ACES College Ambassador, and was the outstanding graduating senior. Dr. Roybal was part of UNM’s first combined MD/PhD graduating class in 2007.
Dr. Roybal completed the EyeSTAR post-doctoral fellowship and ophthalmology residency at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute. His post-doctoral studies focused on gene and stem cell therapies for age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. He completed a vitreoretinal fellowship at the University of Iowa, where he pioneered the use of proteomics for the diagnosis and personalized treatment of retinal diseases.
In 2020, Dr. Roybal started Retina Consultants of New Mexico. As president of the UNM School of Medicine Alumni Association, he initiated the Lobo MD Scholarship, which continues to provide scholarships for medical students. As president of the Greater Albuquerque Medical Association, he has worked with physicians and the legislature to secure medical malpractice legislation that allows physicians to stay in New Mexico. He continues to advocate for physicians and their clinics with our elected and appointed officials. When not at the office or on a Zoom call, you might find him and his wife Sasha at the ranch or at one of New Mexico’s race tracks with their race horses.
