Dr. Shera earned her medical degree from the University of Arkansas and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of New Mexico. As a recently promoted Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, Dr. Shera has emerged as a transformative force within the UNM Health System, playing a key role in advancing outpatient clinical care and graduate medical education through a variety of leadership positions at UNM. Her impactful initiatives in clinical education, including a significant transformation of outpatient medical training in the residency program, have notably enhanced resident wellness, educational outcomes and recruitment, establishing her as a leader in graduate medical education. Her leadership extends beyond education into clinical operations, where she serves as the Clinical Operations Medical Director for the World Health Organization’s Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) initiative in collaboration with New Mexico Medicaid. This pioneering role marks the first implementation of the worldwide ICOPE strategy in the United States, significantly transforming care for aging populations in New Mexico while informing global best practices through partnerships with international organizations. As a past President of the NM Chapter of the ACP, she has played a crucial role in organizing scientific meetings and developing CME content, showcasing her commitment to the advancement of medical knowledge and community health.
