Learn about obstetric anesthesia as a fourth year medical student.
The UNM Department of Anesthesiology strives to provide fourth-year medical students with a broad range of exposure to the field of Obstetric Anesthesiology. Choosing a rotation with our department means you will gain a basic understanding of neuraxial labor analgesia techniques and the perioperative management of obstetric patients with emphasis on cesarean section delivery.

Every rotating student will have the opportunity to practice the spinal anesthesia technique on a mannequin in the BATCAVE (Basic Advanced Trauma Computer Assisted Virtual Experience). When other students rotate on the anesthesiology sub-internship rotation, the student on this elective rotation will be given the opportunity to join the other students for their simulation session in the BATCAVE.
When appropriate, the student may perform spinal and epidural anesthesia. Topics covered in detail include:
Evaluation will be based on observation. A form will be filled out by the anesthesia faculty and residents the students identify, and collected by the rotation director. The standard UNM School of Medicine Student Evaluation Form will be completed by the rotation director.
