The SRMC ED is able to treat and stabilize cardiac, stroke and trauma patients. Although we do transfer some patients, we are able to care for and admit many patients. We do not provide acute neurosurgery, obstetrics or inpatient pediatrics.
The UNM Hospital Main ED attendings staff the SRMC ED. Because it’s a community hospital with fewer residents than the main hospital, in addition to teaching, the attendings get to manage patients themselves and maintain their own procedural skills.
Residents and other learners are able to see patients in a less hectic environment than the UNM Hospital Main ED. They get to experience the differences between academic and community Emergency Medicine. More time is available for learning and longer intellectual conversations with their attendings.
