Admissions and Advisement

Admission to the PA program is based on evaluation of applicants' qualities and experiences that advance the program's mission.

Requirements

All applicants should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree—Prior to application, you must have completed a four-year baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by the Commission on Colleges of a Regional Accrediting Organization.
  • GPA—Your math and science and overall GPAs (last 60 credits) must be 3.0 or greater.
  • Letters of recommendation—Submit one personal reference and two clinical references (i.e. MD/DO/PA/NP) who can speak to your ability to become a PA.
  • Prerequisite courses*—You may apply with one outstanding prerequisite course, which must be completed by December of your application year with a ‘B’ grade or higher. See the PA advising worksheet 2020[AH1]  or the PA advising worksheet for 2021 [AH2] for specifics.
    • Online labs taken for a letter grade in biology, chemistry and/or human anatomy and physiology will be accepted for the 2020 admissions cycle.
    • All prerequisites must be completed with a letter grade. Pass/Fail or CR/NC will not be accepted.
  • Clinical experience—Please complete a minimum of 1,000 direct patient care hours, either in a patient care setting or a significant community care environment. Hours may be earned through a paid or volunteer position.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE)—Official scores of the GRE within the last 5 years are directly reported from ETS to CASPA code 7347. We will not accept scores reported directly to UNM.
    • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, GRE scores are not required for the 2020 admissions cycle.

*Advanced Placement (AP) credit for science prerequisites, statistics and psychology will not be accepted. AP coursework is acceptable for English prerequisites if credits are detailed on applicant’s transcript.

Highest consideration is given to applicants who:

  • Are residents of New Mexico
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities
  • Have an excellent academic record
  • Have prior health care experience
  • Have qualified personal references
  • Have served in the United States Military

International Applicant Requirements  

If English is not your first language or is not the official language of your home country, you must demonstrate English language proficiency. Most applicants must submit official English proficiency test scores that are less than two years old.

Tuition

Current tuition and fee rate for the 27-month Physician Assistant (PA) program is as follows:

You will be expected to have a laptop with internet access and Microsoft Office.
