Estimated total tuition and fees that the student incurs for the entire 27-month Physician Assistant (PA) program, totaling 86 semester credit hours, is as follows, based on current rates:
Resident Tuition & Fees (Tuition, Institution Fees, and Program Fees): $68,367*
Non-Resident Tuition & Fees (Tuition, Institution Fees, and Program Fees): $104,327*
Tuition and fees are billed by semester as students progress through the program. Residency for tuition purposes is handled through the UNM Office of the Registrar.
*Estimate based on Bursar’s tuition memo. We encourage you to visit the UNM Bursar's Office to view current rates as well as details on fees and refund policies. Tuition and fees are subject to change annually by action of the UNM Board of Regents.
In addition to tuition and fees paid to the university, students should anticipate and budget for other expenses associated with program participation, including the following estimated costs:
Total estimated other costs: $61,777
Note: The “other costs” amounts for housing, clinical rotation travel, and transportation are average estimates provided by the PA Program in an effort to promote transparency in costs. These numbers will vary from one student to another depending upon multiple factors, including but not limited to the number of rotations outside Albuquerque and student choice of housing arrangements. Some but not all rural rotation sites have housing available; this information is provided to students when available.
Prospective and current students are encouraged to utilize UNM’s Net Price calculator for further guidance on estimating their total cost of attendance.
Estimated total incurred by the student for the entire ARC-PA accredited program, including tuition, fees, and other costs related to the program, as detailed above:
Resident: $130,144
Non-Resident: $166,104
Amounts are rounded to the nearest dollar. Costs are subject to change and should generally be expected to increase over time.
Financial Aid guidance is provided through the UNM Health Sciences Financial Aid Office. All PA students are encouraged to work with the Health Sciences Financial Aid Office for assistance financing their education.
The PA Program is pleased to offer scholarship opportunities to admitted students who meet the criteria outlined. Scholarship application information is provided to students currently enrolled in the program.
Please see below for scholarship opportunities to help finance your PA education. This is not a complete list of all the financial resources out there and is accurate at the time this is published. Changes may occur over time.
UNM Specific Programs
Most of these scholarships are awarded by the PA Program after students are admitted and enrolled in the program.
Danielle K. Brown Endowed Scholarship
This is an endowed scholarship made possible by the generous donation from Mrs. Brown after her husband received memorable care from a PA in the past. It is awarded by the PA Program.
La Tierra Sagrada Society Physician Assistant Scholarship
This is one of several need-based scholarships organized by the university for various health science programs, including the PA Program.
New Mexico Academy of Physician Assistant Scholarship
This is a need-based scholarship for those interested in caring for those in the rural/underserved communities of New Mexico.
The Norm Taslitz, PhD, Physician Assistant Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship was created as a memorial scholarship for Dr. Norm Taslitz, PhD. Norm was instrumental in the inception and development of the UNM PA Program. This is also a need-based scholarship that is awarded by the PA Program.
UNM Graduate Student Scholarships
UNM Graduate Studies provides a listing of financial resources as a service for graduate students at the University of New Mexico.
Federally Funded Scholarship and Loan Repayment Options
The US Military, depending on branch and commitment, will pay money towards your loans through the Health Professional Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP)
Programs through Indian Health Services (IHS) and the National Health Service Corp (NHSC) offer both scholarship programs as well as loan repayment programs. Typically, the financial assistance awarded is correlated to the number of years of service agreed to.
State of New Mexico Programs
The state of New Mexico is actively recruiting providers to move to New Mexico due to the fact that much of our state is considered “underserved.” There are tax incentives for providers already working in the state as well as both scholarship and loan repayment programs. The amount of financial support in these programs generally depends on the amount of funding they receive and the number of years of service you commit to.
