I grew up in the Southwest, wandering the deserts of Arizona in search of stories. Ultimately the wanderlust led to a combat tour in Afghanistan, where I worked with an anthropology team to understand the cultural nuances of conflict and first realized the power of underlying structures in shaping the health and history of a community. Determined to explore this further, I obtained an undergraduate degree in Anthropology, spent nearly a year on the road in Central and South America, and worked in three different tribal communities, immersing myself in the diverse cultures that have shaped the Southwest. I enrolled in medical school to combine this love of social science with the complex puzzles of the biological sciences. I quickly found myself drawn to rural Family Medicine for its incredible diversity and the privilege to share in patient stories through long-term relationships; and I chose UNM specifically because of its strong training and emphasis on the interconnectedness of personal and community health. I’m excited to join the amazing team at UNM and am committed to providing equitable, high-quality healthcare to rural communities, with an emphasis on addiction medicine, maternal/child health, and community advocacy.
