The University of New Mexico is exactly what I wanted out of residency:  a good mix of case volume, academic education, great faculty, and a location that is a affordable and has lots of other things to enjoy. I haven't seen a program that has a better balance. My favorite part about training in Albuquerque is the trauma exposure with the all time best trauma team, or maybe the resident retreat, or maybe when we took a graduating chief rafting…there has been a lot of good times. Albuquerque feels a bit like the Wild West, it is affordable, close to things that help me relax, including breweries, mountain biking trails, ski hills, etc. My hobbies and interests outside of medicine include mountain biking, skiing, trail running, archery, upland hunting, and fly-fishing. My wife and I love where we live. It is a cozy, quiet place that is a little out of town with an easy commute, which fits our lives perfectly.
