Scientific Core

Supports access to human subjects, consolidates and standardizes mouse prenatal and postnatal alcohol exposure procedures and colony management, and providing statistical support for all components of the center.

Pilot Project Core.

The Core’s overall goal is to provide a critical opportunity to develop new basic, translational and clinical fetal alcohol research projects.

Application Process (separate tab?)

Eligibility:

• Tenure-track and research-track faculty members at UNM, MRN, and nearby institutions.
• Collaborations with UNM investigators required for nearby institutions.

Priorities:

• New investigators without R01-level funding.
• Established investigators from other fields interested in FASD research.
• Established alcohol investigators working outside their usual expertise.

Restrictions:

Pilot funds cannot extend projects already supported by extramural funding.

Application Timeline:

• Application forms and instructions available on the NMARC website.
• Letter of intent due one month after call for proposals.
• Meeting with Dr. Valenzuela and NMARC members for assistance.
• Full applications due three months after call for proposals.

Additional Steps:

If insufficient applications are received, the Pilot Core PI will encourage faculty members to apply through Department Chairs and Center Directors.

Proposal Requirements:

• Abstract and two-page research plan.
• Budget and budget justification.
• Tentative timetable for NIAAA grant submission.
• Letters of support from department chair and key collaborators.
• NIH-style biographical sketches for PI and key personnel.
• Other support documentation.
• Information on vertebrate animals or human subjects, as appropriate.

• Impact of prenatal alcohol exposure on intracranial self-stimulation in adolescent mice.
• Effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the pathologic and vascular effects of repeated mild traumatic brain injuries.
