UNM’s PM&R Brain Injury Fellowship Program intends to train proficient and well-rounded Brain Injury Physiatrists. Our mission is to build a culture of clinical excellence and patient advocacy that empowers fellows to push the field of brain injury medicine forward.
Fellows will be confident leading a multidisciplinary team to evaluate and treat patient s across the breadth of brain injury acuity, severity, and clinical setting. They will capitalize on opportunities to improve care by leveraging a thorough understanding of evidence, ethics, disability rights, and access to care.
The 1-year fellowship will be comprised of inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences relevant to the provision of brain injury medicine. This will include 4 months in the inpatient rehabilitation setting of Lovelace-UNM Rehabilitation Hospital (LUNMRH), 4 months of outpatient clinics at LUNMRH, 2 months of inpatient consultations at UNM Hospital, and 1 month of outpatient clinic at the VA. Fellows will also engage in a 1 month elective.
Inpatient at Lovelace UNM Rehabilitation Hospital (LUNMRH): Fellows will be exposed to traumatic brain injury, stroke, and other forms of non-traumatic brain injury (e.g., anoxic, infectious/ inflammatory, malignancy) in the acute inpatient rehabilitation setting.
Outpatient at LUNMRH: Fellows will acquire clinical skills and knowledge in the subacute & long-term assessment and management of brain injury. This includes broad experiences in medical/ pharmacologic, rehabilitation, and procedural management techniques.
The University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) Consults: A 556-bed public teaching hospital and the only Level-1 Trauma Center in the state of New Mexico. Fellows will learn to evaluate patients in the acute care setting, determine their rehabilitation needs (including the appropriate setting for subsequent rehabilitative care), and make recommendations regarding management, therapies, & modalities to maximize functional potential & prevent diagnosis-related complications.
Raymond G. Murphy Veterans Affairs Medical Center: A Veteran’s Health Administration complexity level 2, tertiary care referral center, and one of only 24 designated Veteran’s Affairs Spinal Cord Injuries and Disorders Systems of Care in the country. Fellows will acquire clinical skills & knowledge in the subacute & long-term assessment & management of brain injury (including exposure to a diverse patient population who have sustained various forms of polytrauma and brain injury, notwithstanding blast and combat -related brain injuries).
Elective: Fellows are provided an opportunity to pursue additional training or skills in an area of interest, to acquire knowledge in an unexplored area, or to make up for perceived academic deficiencies in a specific area.
