The University of New Mexico (UNM) -Lovelace Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) is committed to providing comprehensive care that focuses on the whole patient to help restore and promote function across physical, emotional, social, and vocational domains.
The UNM-Lovelace Sports Medicine Fellowship Program intends to train proficient and well-rounded Sports Physiatrists including a thorough background in musculoskeletal medicine and medical management of athletes with development of procedural skills and sports coverage experience as well as maintaining skills obtained during residency such as electrodiagnosis. The program also integrates many opportunities in research, adaptive sports, community outreach, quality improvement, teaching and curriculum development.

The sports medicine fellowship program provides extensive didactic teaching to supplement and enhance the fellow's clinical education.
This includes a weekly 1 hour didactic series with all other fellows, monthly 4-hour ultrasound practice sessions with the other primary care fellows, and a weekly noon didactic series in clinic with the residents.
In addition, the fellow will participate in monthly grand rounds, journal clubs, and quality improvement conferences.
There will be 12, one month long rotations including 3 months of elective time. Rotations will primarily occur at Lovelace UNM Rehabilitation Hospital and the UNM Training Room Clinic, but the fellow may also spend some time at the VA hospital and Children's Hospital.
All rotations will include ½ day per week of admin/research time and ½ day per week of EMGs ("own specialty").
Core rotations will include sports/ MSK clinics, spine clinics, ultrasound procedures, spine procedures, and training room clinics.

Education in research design and methods as well as quality improvement processes is provided by way of
formal didactic sessions throughout the year.
The fellow is expected to participate in at least one research project and one quality improvement project.
The fellow will be expected to attend the AMSSM Fellows Research & Leadership Conference and submit a project (abstract or case) to either AMSSM or ACSM.
