Residency Program Overview

The Lovelace-UNM PM&R Residency Program is a four-year categorical program located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. You'll get exposure to 21 didactic topics and 7 clinical rotations.

Our residents have the unique opportunity to train in the state's only academic medical center, Level I Trauma Center, Primary Stroke Center and dedicated children's hospital. These four premier training sites are conveniently located within 15 minutes of each other by car.

Where You'll Train

UNM Hospital and Clinics

UNMH is a 556-bed public teaching hospital and the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the state of New Mexico.

UNMH is also home to the only certified burn unit and designated stroke center in the state.

LRH is a 62-bed acute inpatient rehab hospital. LRH offers expert services for a variety of conditions including spinal cord and brain injuries, major multiple traumas and chronic pain.

Raymond G. Murphy Veterans Affairs Medical Center

VAMC is a VHA complexity level 2, tertiary care referral center, supporting a wide variety of rehab services for veterans.

We provide care for patients with conditions such as comprehensive brain injury, polytrauma and spinal cord injuries. We also provide interdisciplinary chronic pain management services, as well as amputee and orthotics clinics.

CTH is the only full-service children's hospital in New Mexico. CTH also comprises the state's only pediatric rehabilitation center.

PM&R Residency: What to Expect

Didactics

An organized, 18-month didactic curriculum complements the residents’ clinical education. Lectures are led by faculty through weekly, half-day sessions, during which residents are relieved of clinical duties to focus on their didactic learning.

Residents also attend monthly grand rounds and journal clubs in addition to rotation-specific lectures and learning sessions.

Scholarly Activity

Residents have opportunities for a broad range of scholarship in the form of research, curriculum development, quality improvement and community outreach. You will receive regular support and mentorship throughout your training to encourage personal growth and success in your scholarly pursuits.

Residents are required to participate at least two scholarly activities during the course of training. At least one of these should be in the form of a quality/process improvement project.

Call Duty

During the advanced years of training (PGY-2 through PGY-4), all call is taken from home. Expect to average 7 weeks of call during the PGY-2 year and 3 weeks of call during the PGY-3 and PGY-4 years.

Clinical Rotations

Your PGY-1 year will be co-managed in coordination with the accredited Internal Medicine Preliminary Year Program at UNM. Rotation experiences include:

Inpatient wards
Emergency medicine
Critical care
Neurology
Psychiatry
Palliative care
Rheumatology

The rotations for your PGY2 - PGY4 years are divided into 10 blocks a year. Each block lasts five to six weeks. Rotations are divided between inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, with approximately 12.5 months of inpatient training, 2.5 months of inpatient consultations, and 21 months of outpatient experience. Two blocks of elective rotations are permitted during the PGY3 and PGY4 years.
