Length: one 3-month rotation
Presbyterian, the largest private health care provider in New Mexico, is an excellent place to get acquainted with private practice in surgical pathology. Pathology Associates of Albuquerque, PA (PAA) is the pathology group which provides services at Presbyterian Hospital and TriCore Reference Laboratories as well as at different locations in New Mexico. The Presbyterian pathology group signs out up to 50,000 cases in a year which include outside consults and cytology. This is a three month senior surgical pathology rotation usually taking place in third or fourth years of residency. The rotation takes place at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. Residents participate in grossing complex and challenging specimens, previewing and signing out surgical pathology and cytology cases and presenting at weekly citywide general tumor board. Residents also get to look at interesting cases and cases with diagnostic difficulty signed out by the attendings everyday in addition to weekly interesting case conference. Drs. Hillary Elwood and Shelly Stepenaskie are board certified in Dermatopathology and teach weekly didactic conferences in Dermatopathology to pathology and dermatology residents. This rotation provides a rounding experience in a busy private practice in pathology.
