Hayley Sanchez, M.D.

Introduction: I was born and raised in Arkansas before moving north to St. Louis, Missouri. I attended Washington University for undergrad before heading down the road to Saint Louis University for medical school. 

Interests

• Pathology Interests: I have been interested in forensic pathology since before going to medical school, and I don't see that interest fading anytime soon. Specifically, I am interested in nonaccidental trauma of all age ranges but particularly pediatric - I really care about making a difference for the most vulnerable of us. 
• Interests Outside of Pathology: I love arts and crafts of all kinds! I've been really into felt crafts lately, as well as scrapbooking. I'm a huge horror fan as well, whether that's reading or watching movies.
• What do you like about living in New Mexico: I am half Mexican (my dad immigrated from Mexico as a child) so it has been wonderful to live in a place where I no longer have to spell my last name for everyone! There was a dearth of Mexican food in St. Louis, so I am living my best life out here. When a restaurant brought out sopaipillas at the end of the meal for the first time here, I thought I was in heaven.

Why I enjoy the pathology program at UNM

My partner and I successfully couples matched here, and we were welcomed as part of the family immediately! Even though she is in a different residency, she's always welcome at our events. Everyone here has been so nice to both of us. Additionally, attendings and directors are extremely supportive of my interest in education, and work to make sure I have opportunities to get involved in teaching, even in my first year.
