Introduction: I grew up in Nixa, MO (Jason Bourne’s home city) and went to Missouri State University and Qingdao University for my undergraduate education. Afterward, I worked at the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center at the University of Missouri before moving to Utah to start medical school at Rocky Vista University.

• What do you like about living in New Mexico: The dry, sunny climate is fantastic. Scenic mountains and warm weather are the perfect combination for outdoor activities like hiking. There are a ton of food options here, from pizza, pupusas, dim sum, pho, and tacos. There is also a great bar scene with many New Mexican beers to try.

Why I enjoy the pathology program at UNM

We have very strong hematopathology, forensics, and transfusion training. Many of our preceptors are writing books, publishing research, authoring ExpertPath articles, and writing standardized questions in the subject of their field. Despite this, our attendings are incredibly approachable. UNM is an excellent choice if you seek academic training without the malignancy associated with many academic programs. Our program has a union, which is relatively active and has made a lot of progress in the past few years. Abundant research and teaching opportunities are available for residents, but participation is always optional. This program was my first choice, and based on my few months here so far, I would rank it first again.
