Department of Pathology Residency Program

Mary Torrez, M.D.

Introduction: I was born and raised in New Mexico. I completed my undergraduate education at New Mexico State University where I received a degree in Biology. I went on to attend UNM School of Medicine, and during medical school, I had the opportunity to be a Post-Sophomore Fellow (PSF) in the Department of Pathology. The PSF year was an incredible and valuable experience, and during that year, I was certain it was the specialty for me.

  • Pathology/Research Interests: Surgical pathology, hematopathology, and medical student and resident education.
  • Interests Outside of Pathology: I enjoy spending time with family, friends and my fur baby, Riggs, traveling, hiking, riding horses, skiing, water activities, concerts, movie quotes, and bungee jumping.

Why I enjoy the pathology program at UNM

I chose UNM because it’s a well-rounded program with world-renowned pathologists. Our attendings are beyond knowledgeable, approachable, and supportive, and there is plenty of opportunity to become more involved, whether it be research, teaching or other projects.
