Theodore Muka, M.D.

Introduction: I was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, but my family moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, when I was six years old. I grew up there until the age of eighteen, when I returned to the United States for college. I completed my undergraduate degree at New Mexico State University and went on to attend medical school at the University of New Mexico.

Interests

• Pathology/Research Interests: I am interested in hematopathology, molecular pathology, and forensic pathology, though I am keeping an open mind as I explore the many facets of the field. 
• What do you like about living in New Mexico: As cliché as it may sound, I really appreciate the people here. They are kind, down to earth, and welcoming. I also enjoy New Mexico’s stunning landscapes and the endless opportunities to spend time outdoors, whether hiking, soaking in hot springs, or simply enjoying the scenery. 
• Interests Outside of Pathology: Outside of medicine, I enjoy reading and watching science fiction, running, hiking, and playing pickleball. I also like relaxing with video games in my downtime. 

Why I enjoy the pathology program at UNM

What I value most about the UNM pathology program is how resident-focused it is. The faculty and staff genuinely care about helping residents thrive, both professionally and personally. The learning environment is supportive and collaborative, without big egos, and there are plenty of opportunities for growth. The camaraderie among the residents and the positive culture within the program are big reasons why I chose to stay at UNM for residency.
