Why UNM is My Choice for Residency: New Mexico is beset with one of the richest historical, cultural, and linguistic records in the United States, not to mention its staggeringly accessible natural beauty, and living here has been one of the great pleasures of my life. From the preservation of Native cultures and practices, to the persistence of traditions and language from early Spanish settlers, the people of New Mexico exhibit an intricate success story of sustainability. Furthermore, the high desert range of landscapes rival the natural wonders of any state in the union, and their relative ease of access is unparalleled. However, intertwined with these oft under-appreciated gems, disparities abound. We are a poor state with all the trappings of poverty. As a doctor in New Mexico, you will take care of all walks of life and see an incredible range of pathologies, from the chronic to the acute. Your time and effort will form integral components of healthcare for so many families, and they will go further here than elsewhere. The Pediatric residency environment at UNMH is one of inclusion and support, and consistently works with residents from a variety of backgrounds. I chose residency here for all of the above reasons and more.
Favorite Things About UNM: Collegial atmosphere; attendings who are accessible and love to teach; interesting patient population.
Favorite Things About NM: New Mexico is one of the great hidden gems of the Southwest, if not the country at large. It has an affordable cost of living, easy access to the outdoors without the lines, a unique history, and diverse population. Also, it has the most incredible manifestation of chile. Arizona, Texas, California, eat your hearts out.
