Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship

The Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship builds skills in managing patients pre, intra, and post-operative care. This include time managing inpatients, outpatients, and operative patients. Fellows train at an NCI-designated Cancer Center and New Mexico’s only Level I Trauma center. 

The program lasts 12 to 18 consecutive months, depending on applicant experience. Each rotation or block is approximately four weeks, during which time the fellow will gain first assist skills performing cases in general surgery, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, urology, and others. 

Approximately six to eight days per month are operative at UNM Hospital and Sandoval Regional Medical Center facilities. The inpatient rotations will change each month; however, all fellows will be doing the same types of cases throughout the year to build surgical skills. 

Curriculum

The fellow will spend four-week blocks on an inpatient service managing inpatients with some outpatient clinic time. Rotations will include: 

  • Elective general surgery
  • Emergency general surgery
  • Trauma
  • Burns/Plastics
  • Trauma/surgical ICU
  • Night float
  • Vascular surgery
  • Surgical oncology
  • Elective rotation (which can be a repeated rotation if desired) 

Other possible rotations:

  • Family medicine
  • Emergency medicine 

Didactics will include lectures from faculty and service conferences with presentations. Ancillary lectures from pharmacy and radiology may be available. Fellow will participate in journal club and present at service conferences. 

Eligibility/Preferred Qualifications

  • Must be licensed and have graduated from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program
  • Must be eligible for CSR/DEA licensure
  • Must be licensed provider by matriculation date
  • Must have BLS or obtain within 30 days of hire. You must have ACLS or obtain as soon as possible from hire date

  • The packet will require 3 professional letters of recommendation (specifications apply, see packet instructions). 

Dates/deadlines

Applications are currently being accepted on a rolling basis. Once application packet received by candidate, full application packet due within 30 days. Matriculation depends on timing of interviews and licensing and credentialing. 

Benefits

  • Fellow will receive a stipend ($61,000 - $94,500) depending on experience to be determined by HR as well as vacation (2 weeks) and sick leave. Vacation must be requested and approved by the director or co-director.
  • Holidays paid, with the expectation of working some holidays. Healthcare benefits also offered. Expectations are approximately 60 hours per week.
  • Beyond the 12-month fellowship, there is no guarantee of employment nor are graduates required to commit to positions at UNMH.
