505-925-0456The Department of Surgery offers an ACGME-accredited two-year fellowship in complex general surgical oncology under the direction of Dr. Bridget Fahy, MD, Professor of Surgery. Our division is an integral part of the Department of Surgery through the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and the ACGME-accredited UNM General Surgery residency program.
The Division currently consists of fellowship-trained surgical oncologists, breast surgeons, and colorectal surgeons. The Division is also a key component of the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, which is part of an elite group of 51 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the U.S.
Located in a unique community with a culturally diverse population, UNM is an ideal place for fellows to learn and discover. The UNM Department of Surgery boasts a robust infrastructure of services, training locations, and resources to help our surgical oncology fellows achieve their academic goals.

A yearly educational program co-sponsored by the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and American Society of Breast Surgeons that reinforces common topics in a variety of surgical oncology disciplines via didactic and interactive sessions.
This local chapter of the American College of Surgeons is dedicated to improving surgical care and maintaining advocacy for standards of care across the state of New Mexico. Membership is open to all New Mexico surgeons, including fellows.
An intensive workshop in the essentials of effective clinical trial designs of therapeutic interventions in the treatment of cancer for clinical fellow and junior faculty clinical researchers in all oncology subspecialties, including radiation and surgical oncology and radiology.
This is a rigorous workshop on the latest developments in molecular biology relevant to clinical oncologists pursuing the desire to bridge the gap as physician-scientists. Covers topics in cancer biology, grant writing strategies, career development, and networking for fellows interested in a career in translational research.
