University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC)

The UNMCCC is a new (2009) state of the art, 5-story, 226,000 square foot ambulatory cancer diagnosis and treatment center. In 2005, UNMCCC achieved our designation from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and then in 2016 the UNMCCC achieved comprehensive designation, the highest federal designation. 

UNMCC is the only cancer center in New Mexico designated by the NCI and one of just 50 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation. It has been designated “the official cancer center of New Mexico” by the state legislature. 

Center Highlights  

• The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) us a free-standing ambulatory care oncology facility and, since 2025, an NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The UNMCCC us the official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in a 400-Mile Radius. The 134 oncology physicians, 122 cancer research scientists, and outstanding staff work as teams to discover the causes and the cures for cancers that disproportionately affect the Non-Hispanic White – with strikingly different patterns of cancer incidence, mortality and disparity. The UNMCCC has outstanding research programs in Cancer Control and Population Science; Cellular and Molecular Oncology; and Cancer Therapeutics.
• The Clinical Translational Sciences Center (CTSC) which is a member of the national NIH CTSA Consortium, and is committed to bettering health by streamlining science, transforming training environments, and improving the conduct, quality, and dissemination of research from laboratories to clinical practice, and out into communities. The CTSC program offers a multitude of assets and resources such as a sophisticated clinical research unit, investigator training programs, biomedical informatics tools genomic technologies, a large-scale drug discovery program, a clinical research data warehouse, and commercialization facilitation.
• Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a collaborative model of medical education and care management that empowers clinicians everywhere to provide better care to more people right where they live. The ECHO Model does not actually “Provide” care to patients. Instead, it dramatically increases access to specialty treatment in rural and underserved areas by providing front-line clinicians with the knowledge and support they need to manage patients with complex conditions such as hepatitis C, HIV, tuberculosis, chronic pain, endocrinology, behavioral health disorders, and many others, rising costs, systemic inefficiencies, and unequal or slow diffusion of best practices. Across the United States and globally, policymakers are recognizing the potential of ECHO to exponentially expand workforce capacity to treat more patients sooner, using existing resources.

U NM Hospital (UNMH)

University of New Mexico Hospital , the state’s only academic medical center, is the primary teaching hospital for the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. 

Hospital Highlights

• UNMH has 540 beds and has approximately 25,000 admissions, performs 19,000 surgeries annually, and had 80,000 ER visits in 2016.
• UNMH cares for a large, diverse population with complex and urgent health needs, providing more than $135 million of uncompensated care per year.
• This hospital is the site of inpatient and OR cases during fellow clinical training.
• The new UNM Hospital Tower will be completed in late 2024. This New Tower will create more space for our patients and employees to better serve our community and health.
• UNMH has a medical/surgical ICU, wound care teams, physical therapy, and other ancillary services needed to maintain the care of surgical oncology patients and to serve as the foundation for complex general surgical oncology fellow clinical training.
