Transfer Student Admissions

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine (UNM SOM) considers requests for transfer. The UNM SOM will consider transfer students on a case-by-case basis who satisfy the following criteria:

• Must be classified as a State of New Mexico resident.
• Must demonstrate a compelling need to transfer.
• Must have at least the minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA required for application to medical school.
• Must have taken the MCAT and received a score of 22 or 494 or above.
• Must be a current medical student in good academic standing at a U.S. medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
• Must have finished all pre-clinical education (normally the first 1.5-2 years of a medical school curriculum)
• Must have taken and passed the U.S. Medical Licensure Exam (USMLE) step 1 with a score of 200 or better and/or pass (for future takes) and be prepared to enter Phase 2 of the UNM SOM curriculum by a date determined by the Office of Medical Student Affairs. 

In addition, the following considerations are taken into account:

• There must be vacancies in Phase 2 and 3 of the medical school curriculum so to accommodate the applicant for the duration of his/her undergraduate medical education.
• The applicant must be willing to complete all requirements of the UNM SOM curriculum.
• The applicant may be required to extend his/her undergraduate medical education beyond the normal four years to complete these requirements. The exact point in the curriculum where the successful transfer applicant is permitted to join the curriculum would be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants that meet the criteria for transfer as outlined above may submit a formal request by emailing the SOM Office of Admissions at somadmissions@salud.unm.edu. Within your formal request, include how you meet all of the minimum requirements for transfer. Deadline to submit your request is February 14, 2025 to start by May 2025. Transfer applications to start in May 2024 is closed.
