Clinical Rotation

This UNM-Albuquerque-based course is designed as an introduction to Clinical Toxicology for medical students, pharmacy students, postgraduate residents, and fellows. The rotation is a combination of case-based discussion, didactic sessions, and bedside patient examination.

This course is designed to provide the learner with a strong foundation in the diagnosis and care of the poisoned patient. Learners who complete this course will be able to:

• Recognize and describe common toxidromes
• Describe the pathophysiology resulting from exposure to xenobiotics and natural toxins
• Develop an evidence-based approach to the treatment of common and complex toxicological problems
• Develop management plans for poisoned patients, including selection and administration of antidotes
• Critically compare decontamination techniques and identify scenarios in which they are likely to be beneficial
• Interpret laboratory data and EKGs to assist in the diagnosis and care of the poisoned patient
• Recognize physical exam findings specific to poisoned patients
• Understand the role of the Poison and Drug Information Center in the care of poisoned patients and public health management
