Undergraduate-level professional certificates offered by the College of Population Health are credit-based courses designed for students who want to improve their career opportunities in the public health field. Enrollment requires acceptance as a non-degree UNM student. Students who successfully complete the program will be eligible for transfer credit with other institutions. They can also use their certificate as evidence of competency in certain areas of population health.
Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Certificate
This online, multidisciplinary MCH leadership program is provided by the College of Population Health. Participants can gain information and skills related to the health and well-being of women, children, and families through the MCH certificate with a focus on MCH leadership. Women's health, children's health, social determinants of health, social and environmental factors that influence health, life course theory, MCH policy, MCH research, MCH programs, culturally and linguistically focused interventions, nutrition, oral health, MCH leadership, interdisciplinary approaches, and prevention and health promotion techniques are among the subjects covered.
Students studying Maternal and Child Health will gain:
The capacity to carefully assess community and individual needs, work in equitable cooperation with communities and individuals, and support the implementation of genuine change based on community partnerships to enhance lives
The specialized understanding of MCH and learning how to apply it to their own field of practice
The capacity to acquire and use the abilities required to become a top-notch MCH practitioner or researcher
Transformative Ecologies: Food, Farming, and People's Health
This cirtificate addresses the limited availability of undergraduate educational opportunities that promote comprehensive understanding of sustainable food systems, agriculture, and their impact on population health outcomes. Developed in partnership with Sustainability Studies, UNM Department of Geography, the program aims to develop a new generation of conservationists pursuing careers in agriculture, natural resource conservation, environmental studies, and population health sciences.
Admission Requirements
The Transformative Ecologies: Food, Farming, and People's Health certificate is a transdisciplinary undergraduate professional program comprising 15 credits distributed across five 3-credit courses. Undergraduate students with at least 26 credits are eligible to register for the certificate.
Students enrolled in certificate courses may apply these credits toward their undergraduate degrees, provided the credits align with their academic programs. Students who have taken the certificate courses prior to fall 2025 may use those credits toward the certificate. PH 460 (2): Local Food Systems, Sustainability, and Population Health, SUST 1134, GEOG 464, and SUST 410 may all have been completed in semesters prior to fall 2025. Those courses may be counted toward the certificate if completed within the past four years -starting in fall 2021
