The New Mexico Health Care Workforce Committee was formally created in 2011 with the passage of the Health Care Work Force Data Collection, Analysis and Policy Act (New Mexico Statute §24‑14C‑1). In 2012, an amendment to the Act assigned data stewardship and committee leadership to The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, bringing the unique resources and strengths of the state’s only academic health center to these efforts.
The Committee was established to assess, monitor, and improve the supply and distribution of healthcare professionals across the state. Its primary purpose is to provide data-driven insights and policy recommendations that address critical shortages, improve access to care, and ensure that New Mexico’s diverse communities are served by a well-trained and adequately supported healthcare workforce.
The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center convenes regular meetings of the New Mexico Health Care Workforce Committee. Meetings are chaired by the Health Sciences Center’s Vice President for Research.
This collaborative work group brings together key stakeholders from across the state, including representatives of health care consumers, providers, and professional organizations for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, dentists, dental hygienists, and pharmacists. Members also include leaders from health care workforce training programs, the Department of Health, the Public Education Department, the Higher Education Department, and professional licensing boards.
