Remembrances

After his death, the following poem (author unknown) was sent to Dr. Pitcher’s family anonymously by a former trainee or mentee:

The Consult

Gently, softly, simply they come

denigrated refuse

cast off by a thousand “healers”

who really didn’t care.

Mediocrity treats symptoms

Adequacy treats diseases

Excellence treats patients

This always ingrained against the day

when I, too, would seek mediocrity.

Dedicated to J. Loren Pitcher from one who often is expedient, but who, because of what he taught us, never quite forgives himself for being so.
