The Health Sciences Student Council (HSSC) represents all of the programs on the health sciences campus and creates a platform where each student can have their voice heard. The executive committee along with the council of representatives from the individual programs have the ability to implement changes on campus; in the past we purchased new microwaves for Domenici, and improved security to the student lounge by requiring badge access. We represent the student body on committees such as the library renovation committee, the campus safety committee, and the Information Technology Committee to name a few.
As a community we bring attention to events happening across campus like the nursing school blood drives, the dental hygiene clinics, the fit for fun 5k benefitting the healthy and fit children’s clinic, and the BSGP research day. We organize outreach events with the community in partnership with UNM IHOP and attend tabling events on main campus to encourage students to investigate all of the health sciences degree opportunities.
The council meetings are open to all students to attend along with their voting representatives and we create time at the end of each meeting for anyone to bring up new business. The HSSC is an opportunity for students across north campus to gain leadership experience that otherwise is hard to come by while in school. The executive committee and school representatives are leadership roles that can and should be put on resumes and create networking opportunities that can last beyond our time in school. Additionally, we find guest speakers to come to our meeting every month to educate the council on resources on campus such as the women’s resource center, new opportunities coming to campus like the new wellness app, and new committees that require student representation.
If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to any of the executive committee members and we’d be more than happy to help. We hope to see you at our monthly HSSC meetings (held on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:00pm). Please check our schedule of events for other ways to connect with us.
