Health Careers Academy (HCA)

Health Careers Academy is an intense and rewarding multi-week, summer and academic year program for current high school sophomores and juniors offered at local sites around New Mexico. Each site offers a unique experience combining experiential learning with academic enrichment related to health careers. The programs are designed to enhance math, science, language arts and critical thinking skills while exposing students to health and science related professions, test preparation and service-learning.   

HCA is currently offered in five regions of New Mexico, applicants are encouraged to apply for the program in the region where they reside. For specific locations, schedules and eligibility, see program site list below.

Albuquerque Program Flyer 

Location: Virtual, based at UNM Health Sciences 

Specific Eligibility: Open to Albuquerque and Surrounding Areas 

Applications Due: April 2, 2021 

Summer Schedule: June 7, 2021 – July 2, 2021, M-F, 8am-12pm 

Academic-Year Schedule: Sep 2021 – Apr 2022, Bi-Weekly, Sat, 9-10am

Specific Eligibility: Open to current sophomores and juniors in San Juan and McKinley Counties and nearby areas of Navajo Nation.

The HCA Experience

  • Enhance math, science, language, and critical thinking skills relevant to health care degree pathways 
  • Explore and expand your health professions interest 
  • Increase your awareness of the urgent need for diverse healthcare in our state and tribal communities 
  • Build your confidence in your readiness for higher education 
  • Stipend upon completion of the program 


HCA Activities May Include

  • Participation in college entrance exam prep 
  • Sessions on Cultural Humility 
  • Service-Learning Opportunities 
  • Presentations on Health Professions 
  • Skills related to health careers 


HCA Expectations

  • Commit to the full multi-week program plus one-day orientation, length of program dependent on location. 
  • Secure daily transportation to program locations, or access to internet for virtual programs.  
  • Participants must comply with The Pathfinder- UNM Student HandbookFailure to comply with campus policies regarding conduct, academic honesty, and lawful behavior may result in dismissal from the program. 


HCA Eligibility

  • Must Be a New Mexico resident, or Navajo Nation resident with a valid SSN or ITIN, which will only be used for payment purposes. 
  • Be a current sophomore or junior in high school when you apply to the program. 
  • Have an expressed interest in pursuing a health career. 
  • Have a 2.5 GPA or higher.
