New Mexico Clinical Education Program (ClinEd)

Gain clinical experience working with rural and/or underserved populations in the New Mexico Clinical Education Program (ClinEd) as you prepare to apply to the University of New Mexico Health Science Center health professions programs. During this multi-week summer opportunity, you will shadow clinicians at a rural and/or underserved primary care facility or community health center, become more familiar with community health topics, and learn more about the application process for the health professions programs.  

Clinical Experience for Health Professions School

ClinEd is based at the UNM Health Sciences campus in Albuquerque, NM. The clinical shadowing component of the program takes place at various sites throughout the state. During your time in this program, you can expect the following:

• Clinical shadowing in rural and/or underserved areas of New Mexico. 
• Patient interaction under the supervision of a clinician.
• Knowledge about community health issues.
• Research experience and community project development.
• Mentoring opportunities from health care professionals.
• Sessions on cultural humility.
• Exposure to telehealth models of care. 

Your Duties

At your assigned clinic, you'll rotate through various departments while watching and helping medical professionals perform tasks in areas such as:

• Community outreach and patient education.
• Intake procedures, physical exams, diagnoses and treatments.
• Emergency medical services and treatments.
• Laboratory, pharmacy and x-ray.
• Administration, business management and medical records.

ClinEd Eligibility

• Must be a New Mexico resident, or Navajo Nation resident with a valid SSN or ITIN (for payment purposes only).
• College student pursuing a health-related degree, or recent college graduate interested in a health career.
• Have a GPA of at least 2.75.
• Can live near your assigned clinic for five weeks.
