About The Program

The University of New Mexico Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) program was established in 1972. The program offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

The UNM MLS program vision is to be the go-to resource for providing exceptional MLS education and leadership in New Mexico and the Southwest.

Our mission is to (a) Provide learners with an excellent education in Medical Laboratory Sciences, and (b) Advance collaborations with health care professionals and all educators/learners in the health care professions.

Career Opportunities

Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Technology is the rapidly expanding health profession of clinical laboratory medicine. With tremendous advances in medical research in recent years, modern health care has become increasingly dependent on a growing variety of complex laboratory tests to diagnose and treat disease. The Medical Technologist is a professional clinical laboratory scientist who, as a member of the health care team, is responsible for providing this essential testing service in the fields of Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Hematology, Clinical Microbiology, Urinalysis, Blood Banking, and Serology.

Additionally, Medical Technologists are preferentially hired by several leading biotechnology firms to assist in research. Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technologists require a broad educational background and clinical lab training to work in these areas of a hospital lab. They are responsible for the quality and accuracy of analysis of patient samples, which provide critical information to physicians and primary care providers who are treating patients.

Program Outcomes

Graduation Rate, NAACLS benchmark: Three years consecutive results of graduation rates demonstrating an average of at least 70% of students who have begun the final half of the program (clinical practicum semester) go on to successfully graduate from the program as calculated by the most recent three-year period.

Certification Exam Pass Rate, NAACLS benchmark: Three years consecutive results of graduate certification rates demonstrating an average of at least 75% pass rate on the ASCP-BOC examinations, for those who take the exam within the first year of graduation as calculated by the most recent three-year period.

Graduate Placement Rate, NAACLS benchmark: Three years consecutive results of graduate placement rates demonstrating that an average of at least 70% of respondent graduates either find employment in the field or a closely related field (for those who seek employment) or continue their education within one year of graduation as calculated by the most recent three-year period.
