The University of New Mexico Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) program was established in 1972. The program offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.
The UNM MLS program vision is to be the go-to resource for providing exceptional MLS education and leadership in New Mexico and the Southwest.
Our mission is to (a) Provide learners with an excellent education in Medical Laboratory Sciences, and (b) Advance collaborations with health care professionals and all educators/learners in the health care professions.
Medical Laboratory Sciences, also known as Medical Technology is the rapidly expanding health profession of clinical laboratory medicine. With tremendous advances in medical research in recent years, modern health care has become increasingly dependent on a growing variety of complex laboratory tests to diagnose and treat disease. A Medical Laboratory Scientist is a professional in the clinical laboratory who, as a member of the health care team, is responsible for providing essential clinical testing services in the areas of Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Hematology, Clinical Microbiology, Urinalysis, Blood Banking, Serology, and other specialized fields.
Medical Laboratory Scientists require a broad educational background and clinical laboratory training to work in the various areas of the clinical laboratory. They are responsible for the quality and accuracy of analysis of patient samples, which provide critical information to physicians and primary care providers who are treating patients.
Additionally, Medical Laboratory Scientists are preferentially hired by clinical laboratory suppliers, and leading biotechnology firms to assist in research.
