Tara G. Ooms Konecny is the attending veterinarian for three animal care and use research programs to include: The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, The University of New Mexico Central Campus and The New Mexico Veteran’s Administration Health Care Systems. As Attending Veterinarian, she is responsible for the health and wellbeing of all laboratory animals used at these institutions in accordance with the animal welfare act regulations and the NIH Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
Dr. Ooms is also the Director of the Health Sciences Center Animal Resource Facility responsible for fiscal management of the core and service support to over 65 Faculty animal research laboratories.
Under her roles, she provides institutional service and direct support to Faculty, Post-docs, Staff and Students:
Biotechnical teaching (wet lab animal handling and research techniques).
Consultation (e.g. protocol design, animal models development, anesthesia, analgesia and pain management, genetic model management and breeding paradigms and regulatory/policy requirements).
Attending Veterinarian, three Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees.
